These photos were taken after the Eastern Market After Dark DDF (Detroit Design Festival) Fashion Showcase. Boy, was that a looooong day. But there is always time for taking impromptu photos.

Hour Detroit’s Best Dressed

Downtown Detroit

(Custom lace gown by Ann Nahari)

I heard about Hour Detroit’s Best Dressed for two years in a row and somehow never got a chance to attend. I called Somerset. I emailed and even called Hour Magazine. And no response. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be, I thought. Finally, a few days before the event, their PR firm contacted me with a press pass. I was ecstatic.

SAM_3904

I felt like an all black dress would’ve been too blah…I wanted to make a splash at the event. I decided what better color to wear: red!

Hawt like fire.

Explosive like lava.

Spicy like peppers.

I adore this photo. It says curvy fashionista conquers the world.

By the way: hat and sunnies from Forever 21, neck piece from Burlington, and belt was from Rainbow Clothing.

Close-up. Tried new foundation from Lancome. Lipstick by Kat Von D. No, Madinah didn’t beat my face. I had to do it all by my lonesome. My wing liner is getting a little better.

Oh, Hey at Lil Miss JB Style and Colour and Grace.

The photo above shows a lady who just got off a plane, had about four hours of sleep, and curated an entire photo-shoot with wardrobe included for four models from another state. Mind blown.

So basically, I was introduced to Sumiyyah of Ann Nahari earlier this year. We clicked immediately. She told me she had equipment. I told her I could get models and curate the shoot. We came up with this set of beautiful photos. Our concept was ‘Ragin’ Turbans’.

IMG_8558(Model: Jonda/ Stylist: Leah V.)

I wanted this shoot to be culturally diverse, as well as body-diverse. We wanted to show people that anyone could rock a turban!

IMG_8597(Model: Brittany, Wardrobe/Turban: Leah V.)

I found Brittany off Instagram. She’s also an Atlanta-native. Boy, did she transform!

I fell in love with this “Golden Girls” sequin top.

IMG_8687

So fierce. I can’t even handle it. I love when my team’s work comes to life!

Erica is also a local Atlanta model and a dance choreographer. Such a pleasure to work with 🙂

For this look, I was going for African Queen. I love how the prints mix and collide.

I had an idea for a dress. Sumiyyah took my idea and made it come to life. The dress fit like a glove. I love designing!

So, at the end of the day, this was an amazing shoot. Everyone chipped in when I started to freak out. Clothes and bits of fabric was everywhere. All in all I had a wonderful time curating this shoot. Thanks to everyone who was involved :0 🙂 😮

Ford Freedom Awards 2015

Before I begin going into the awards show and the unforgettable musical performances. I just want to shout out my ‘glam’ team. Madinah hooked me up once again with this dramatic, yet subtle makeup look. She and her daughter, Lamiah, also helped me get dressed and accessorized 🙂 The owner of Ann Nahari, shipped my couture gown overnight. I designed this gown with her a few months ago, and she brought my idea to life. Thanks!

I styled this entire look. I haven’t really worn red that much, but I am experimenting with new textures and colors this season.

20150505_213458I never would’ve found out about this event unless Carlotta didn’t mention it on her Facebook page. Thanks for the invite. We were definitely the ‘Ladies in Red’.

20150505_205847Special musical guests for the evening was Big Sean and award winning singer, Ledisi. She can blow!

20150505_222617Shout out to White Castle for being open 24 hours!

Fashion Blogger Meet & Greet

Before I get into all the fabulous pictures and my beat face and the event, I want to stop and thank Summiyah for inviting me to Atlanta to run a photo shoot (photos coming soon)! We talked back and forth for over six weeks trying to come up with ideas and concepts. She said, “Let’s do ragin’ turbans!”

My reply, “Let’s do it. When and where?”

So, thanks so much for allowing me to create, showcase my talents, and merge them with your own.

*Muah 🙂

(The Hubby)

I want to give a large shout out to my husband for making it possible for me to travel. He also helped behind the scenes. He ironed model’s clothes and he set up equipment. Thanks bae!

I also styled him. You like his vintage shirt?

20150321_185800

A few friends and fans came to meet me.

20150321_185840

Yes. My face is huge, but beat. And my Susu came to see me. She is a local designer in the Atlanta area.

Another fan and local designer. Thanks for coming out.

#Ad I either used to get “oh, you dress pretty for a big girl” or I just got teased for the way I expressed myself with fashion. Even though I was limited as a plus-size Muslim girl growing up, I still found ways to rock an outfit using what I had. Because I liked to wear bold prints and mix pattens and layers, I was a target for harsh comments and hurtful names. A lot of bullies (because that’s what they are) wanted me to fall in line. Be normal. Shine less. So, they belittled me. Laughed at me in front of others. Made fun of the way I expressed myself. I’d always feel like an outsider, but I remember finding freedom in picking and choosing how I adorned my body. The brighter the better. I wanted to stand out when the world told me to take a seat. No matter how much people picked on me or called me weird, I always found a way to be exactly who I was. Unapologetically. I’m excited that retailers like @monsoon have stylish pieces that you can mix and match. Dress modestly if you choose. Modest and stylish do not have to be exclusive. You can be just as bold and sexy. There are so many styles to dive into y’all! You don’t have to follow the trends to be in. Make yo own lane! Have you ever been made fun of for your style choices or fashion sense? Have you ever gotten the “you dress nice for a big girl”? All bodies can chime in. Let’s chat. #MyMonsoon #newyorkblogger #psootd #plussize #instafashion #bodypositive #bgki #honormycurves #effyourbeautystandards #pizzasisters4lyfe #blackgirlswhoblog #fashion #londonblogger #psfashion #blackgirlmagic #muslimgirl #bodyconfidence #plusmodel #feminist #intersectionalfeminism #turbanista #bodydysmorphia #fatacceptance #selflove #goldenconfidence #modestfashion #ootd
