Many fashionistas, naturalistas, health gurus, and creative souls came together and made this 2nd annual event a great success.

Embrace

Guests from all over the city came together to attend the style, health, and beauty workshops.

Embrace4I thought these two were just stunning in their colorful print and floral patterned dresses.

Outfit Details: The dress and shades are from Forever21, and the floral jacket I got from Burlington Coat Factory 🙂

Thank you Ginny for inviting me. I learned a lot about health, beauty, and style. Can’t wait for the third expo!

Zarinah El-Amin Naeem is the chief founder of the Headwrap Expo, first debuting her show last year in Dearborn with hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures coming together for several causes: interfaith relations, the art of headwrapping, and fashion. She plans to take her expo on the road to the Big Apple, New York in November.

I had the pleasure of working with all the models in the fashion segments, teaching them how to walk with poise and pose for the cameras like never before. I must say, I am so very proud of all of you who ‘werked’ and ‘ripped’ the runway.

expo3Look at all of these colors and textures!

expo5You know we had to take some selfies before my loves went on stage 🙂

expo12Marketta and her sister, Jathiyah, really made the fashion segments run smoothly. They didn’t get any sleep trying to figure out the what-was-whats. Congrats to our fashion coordinators!

It was a tiring day, but I always have time to pose.

Samurai: Beyond the Armor Finale Fashion Show

Detroit Institute of Art

Downtown Detroit

20140517_122519

Ten local designers from the Metro Detroit Area were chosen to create their own individual samurai inspired looks. Weeks before the show, thousands of people voted for their favorite ensemble. And the winner was announced at the end of the show by The Detroit Garment Guild!

Before I reveal the winner here are a few of my favorite looks in the show. I loved this reptile looking blazer with the pumpkin colored trousers.

This dainty ballerina tip-toed down the runway with this feminine gown.

Nope! This one didn’t win but this gown is definitely winning in my book.

And the winner is… Janna Coumoundouros’s gown. She is a local jewelry maker and photographer, Lilacpop. I’ve seen her around butnever knew she was a designer too! By the way the crown gasped I knew that he dress was the winner.

A model and the designer. So much work was involved in these pieces.

I couldn’t even post yesterday because I was over it. For a long time I racked my brain. What could I say that had meaning. Impact. How could I make someone else’s day better instead of dwelling in my own existential crisis? Nothing. I felt like giving up... Truth is, that sometimes I feel like I am living the lives of two or three very different people. There’s the internet persona. The IRL me. And, the me when I’m alone with my own thoughts. Sometimes they intersect and other times they fly in different directions, dragging me along. In 2013, I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. I felt as though I’d been branded. Where I came from, you just prayed your mental problems away. You just hid them. You dealt with it. Privately. Because having mental issues meant that something was wrong with you. Your faith was weak. I have these bouts where I have no clue who I am. I am floating. I am imbalanced. And on edge. Crying at any little thing. I look at photos of myself, cringe, and find the most hideous things to nitpick at. I feel like the hugest person in the room. I’m taking up too much space. I don’t deserve the things that I have. There’s this pressure on my chest, on my back to perform. Because that’s what everyone else does here. They perform. For likes. I’m sharing this because I know that in my current state, sharing my ugly non-IG worthy struggles with identity and mental illness will touch someone else. Someone else needs to hear this. That we ain’t all okay all the time and that’s okay. I’m sending you love. How does this confessional make you feel? Are you okay today or are you not okay? Let’s normalize conversations about mental illness. This is a safe space to chat ❤️ 📸 @awake.dreaming #detroitblogger #psootd #mentalhealth #instafashion #bodypositive #portraitphotography #effyourbeautystandards #pizzasisters4lyfe #blackgirlswhoblog #londonblogger #psfashion #blackgirlmagic #muslimgirl #fatacceptance #seventeen #queen #turbanista #honormycurves #bodydysmorphia #instabeauty #intersectionalfeminism #fashionblogger #sequindress #eatingdisorderrecovery #editorial #hijabi #modestfashion #selfcare #monochromatic #highfashion
