Leah V.’s Hepburn Inspired Photo Shoot

When I begin any photo shoot or creative process, I always choose a theme or an era. Then I allow it to grow, piece by piece, brick by brick. I wanted a dark-haired model and I wanted to create a billowy tulle skirt in black.

leah_0848

Griselda and I are friends on Facebook, she responded to my post looking for a sultry dark-haired muse. And it was set. I usually do colorful ensembles with a lot of print and pattern, so for this shoot I wanted to do the complete opposite.

leah_0949

Initially, I was going for a modern ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ inspired shoot, but then it took a creative turn. Griselda has this Lady Gaga’esque nature about her, so we went with the flow.

IMG_0925Griselda slayed the shoot. She was easy to work with and high-energy. Here’s what she had to say about working with us: “Working with Leah was such a wonderful experience. She let me know her vision, but also gave me the opportunity to give her my personal thoughts. Through laughter and jokes, she kept it professional. I look forward to working with her again.”

I love working with a team of down-to-earth creative individuals. Davide did a wonderful job (as usual) being patient and adding the cool smoky background. And of course my MUA, Madinah, beat her face to perfection.

20150517_142241So let’s talk about my beat face for a sec. This green dramatic cut-crease was everything. Thanks Madinah 🙂

20150517_180228Jannah (in the middle) was the fashion and event coordinator for the expo. She invited me to speak about my personal style, catching good deals, and how to walk in any room and own it!

My lil sis, also named Jannah, came out to support. Like our ugly fake laughs? Ha.

20150517_153740My fashionable friend, Cassy, also came out to support! Love her dress.

Ford Freedom Awards 2015

Before I begin going into the awards show and the unforgettable musical performances. I just want to shout out my ‘glam’ team. Madinah hooked me up once again with this dramatic, yet subtle makeup look. She and her daughter, Lamiah, also helped me get dressed and accessorized 🙂 The owner of Ann Nahari, shipped my couture gown overnight. I designed this gown with her a few months ago, and she brought my idea to life. Thanks!

20150505_212725

I styled this entire look. I haven’t really worn red that much, but I am experimenting with new textures and colors this season.

Dress: Ann Nahari

Lace Turban: Indo/Paki Flea Market

Belt: Dots

Head piece, Earrings, and Bracelet: Forever 21

20150505_213458I never would’ve found out about this event unless Carlotta didn’t mention it on her Facebook page. Thanks for the invite. We were definitely the ‘Ladies in Red’.

20150505_205847Special musical guests for the evening was Big Sean and award winning singer, Ledisi. She can blow!

20150505_222617Shout out to White Castle for being open 24 hours!

20150207_204141

I wasn’t quite sure where I was going, but I was determined to wear my tutu shirt that my bestie, Cassy M., gave me.

20150207_204148

I was feeling myself 🙂

The Tutu shirt is made by Krafty.

A selfie was in order. The lipstick is called Graylite by RK Kiss in matte. I also used a bright gray liner.

This is my Kanye face.

Gosh. I just love when Madinah does my make-up. She wanted to try a soft face with a blue lip.

I2

She also wrapped my turban for me. I love the new style.

I1

I wish my skin looked this smooth everyday. The struggle.

I5

Yes, it’s a photo shoot. All black everything ‘curvy style’ with polka dot leggings underneath a sheer maxi dress from

Forever 21.

I (heart) my MUA!

My sister, Taahira, modeled she is getting her head wrapped by Fatima.

Head21I did a little head wrap of my own. You likey?

HeadThis pic is super dark. But my OOTD begins with a yellow blazer from Torrid, and the dress is like three years old from Dots Fashions. The accessories are from Rainbow and DEB’s. And the “Flinstone” necklace was a gift from a friend.

I must give my shoutouts to a few of the fashion team members and headwrap stylists that made this all happen: Madinah, Janeea, Laila, Huda, Taqwa, Jathiyah, Marketta, Jendayi, all the stylists, the designers, the floor models, and every volunteer. Great job you guys 🙂

BeforeThis will be the first and last time you see my face naked like this!

Before1My friend, Madinah, the MUA wanted to practice her skills. So, I played the mannequin. She starts out by shaping, contouring, and shading the eyebrows.

Before2She blends the colors on my eye lids, then adds some false lashes for glamour and drama.

Before4The concealer and foundation process begin. I look like Simba from the Lion King 🙂

Before7The finished process. She finished the look with an ombre lip. A queen in the making.

Before6Before5

Model Behavior. I love makeup.

Before8I am wearing a dress I got from Dot’s a few years ago, and the blazer is from Torrid. The makeup was done and turban wrapped by Madinah.

I remember being a girl very much so into fashion and going to stores where they had a small, tiny sections for plus-size women all the way in the back of the store or near the furniture, in the basement. No effort was put into the style of the mannequins. No bright colors or bold prints. The spaces were drab and dull. But the straight-size section was up front. Colors and racks upon racks of choices. A true stylista’s playground. For a little girl who was a size 16 at 13 years old, how do you think that made me feel? How many of us has had to take the walk of shame to the plus-size section and settle? So, I bought a pair of jeans that were three sizes too small. My “fitspo” jeans. If I could starve myself enough to get into those jeans, shop in the straight-size section, then and only then would my worth align. Worth hadn’t belong to fatties like me. Or that’s what society had brainwashed me to believe. Although we have a long way to go, I’m so glad there are a retailers out there that I can actually fit my wide size 24 thighs into these @warpweftworld jeans and top comfortably. Have you ever bought too small clothes for motivation to lose weight? What size were you when you were little? Any body can chime in. Let’s chat.
