Essence Street Style Awards

NYFW: Part Two

September 13, 2015

Dumbo, Brooklyn

This is part two of my NYFW journey. So after being denied access to Rachel Zoe’s show, I took the subway (with my large baby blue tutu) to Dumbo, Brooklyn to the Essence Street Style Awards. I met up with some native Detroiters, met a buddy from Boston, my bestie Kait, and of course, I took some bomb street style photos. Check em’ out:

Preggers n’ Chic: she basically took three different concepts and smashed them together. And it worked.

 Loving the different textures here.

Oh, hi there. I caught this fashionista in mid-convo.

I was immersed in so many turban looks.

Large shades, clutches, and kilts.

I can’t even tell you all the things I love about this ensemble. Just love!

 Natural hair. Don’t care.

Basically, this pic was taken under my umbrella when the rain decided to pour down on us fashionistas. Kori is a local blogger from the D. She stays selfie ready.

I guess I did take over NYFW after all.

Empowerment: Fashion Blogger Style

DSC08917(Photo: Worldiction)

Life is funny. The right people kind of just fall into your lap when you least expect it. I met these crazy fashion bloggers at different times, but it is like we’ve known each other for years.

DSC08859(Photo: Worldiction)

I’ve been blogging for about 2+ years now and didn’t even know there were other local bloggers like myself floating around the city. We’ve bounced around from fashion show to fashion show, colliding at the last step. And this happened.

DSC08925(Photo: Worldiction)

We decided to do a silver and black themed shoot, geared towards empowerment, strength, and entrepreneurship. Basically, everything we aspire to be and want to inspire others to partake in. Scott M., Worldiction, a local art photographer allowed our creative juices to flow without interruption.

Each of our personalities and styles are different, yet we all have a common goal of wanting to empower each other through our blogs and vlogs as well as our audiences by encouraging creativity and individuality, a strong sense of self.

Shall we do a wardrobe breakdown?

Turban/Scarf: Borrowed

Neck piece: I made it, booyah!

Lace Dress: F21 Plus

Snake Bracelet: Deb’s

Earrings and Ring: Joanne’s Fabric

Lace Hand Piece: Claire’s

Ballet Flats: Pay-Less

This year has been a whirlwind of successes and failures. But as I keep pushing and meeting new people who inspire me every moment, I find the failures shrinking. Life is about living through our experiences and finding out what we’re supposed to learn from them. I am thankful to have a set of empowering women–and men–who push me to be something more, something greater than myself.

20150517_180228Jannah (in the middle) was the fashion and event coordinator for the expo. She invited me to speak about my personal style, catching good deals, and how to walk in any room and own it!

My lil sis, also named Jannah, came out to support. Like our ugly fake laughs? Ha.

20150517_153740My fashionable friend, Cassy, also came out to support! Love her dress.

I met Etta and Jennifer last year at a natural hair event at WSU. They were really tall and boisterous. Not to mention their hair was super dope. I met them again at the restaurant they own, Sweet Potato Sensations, in Redford. Months went by…

20150516_154010

One day, Etta asked me if I’d be interested in doing a “headwrapping” session at their event. Hellz yeah! I replied. When and Where?

20150516_151332(One of my turban tutorial models)

When I tell you these ladies showed out…they showed out! Many of the women packed into the room, wanting to know everything about turbans and how to tie them.

20150516_161422Another happy turban model

20150516_180047(My view of the audience!)

So not only was I able to teach the ladies about turbans, but I also got to speak on the style and fashion panel.

20150516_162639

My friends came out to support 🙂

20150516_191600

And we got to meet Mia Ray, fashion & lifestyle blogger

20150516_191023

Raina B. sat next to me on the panel. A positive force, indeed.

20150516_194712

Ebony, Trish’s Garage, was also on the panel.

Thanks so much for having me Naturally Flyy Detroit!!!

I remember being a girl very much so into fashion and going to stores where they had a small, tiny sections for plus-size women all the way in the back of the store or near the furniture, in the basement. No effort was put into the style of the mannequins. No bright colors or bold prints. The spaces were drab and dull. But the straight-size section was up front. Colors and racks upon racks of choices. A true stylista’s playground. For a little girl who was a size 16 at 13 years old, how do you think that made me feel? How many of us has had to take the walk of shame to the plus-size section and settle? So, I bought a pair of jeans that were three sizes too small. My “fitspo” jeans. If I could starve myself enough to get into those jeans, shop in the straight-size section, then and only then would my worth align. Worth hadn’t belong to fatties like me. Or that’s what society had brainwashed me to believe. Although we have a long way to go, I’m so glad there are a retailers out there that I can actually fit my wide size 24 thighs into these @warpweftworld jeans and top comfortably. Have you ever bought too small clothes for motivation to lose weight? What size were you when you were little? Any body can chime in. Let’s chat.
